Blank Books: A Writer's Best Friend by Lisa Koosis

Blank books are everywhere these days. Whether you're drawn to the ornate, artsy variety in the gift department of your favorite bookstore or the spiral-bound type that are available in bulk at back-to-school time, or even the cheaper, dollar-store variety, blank books are a must-have for any writer.

In this age of technology, it's easy to pass up such a low-tech goodie as a blank book. Many writers write solely on their computers, forsaking pen and paper altogether. So why choose a blank book?

Perfect for their portability, blank books can be tucked into purses, briefcases, or tote-bags, or even into the glove compartment of a car. This makes them ideal for those quick snatches of inspiration that come at odd moments or those stolen moments of writing time. Why not keep one beside the bed to capture fragments of dreams or those burning pieces of stories and poetry that come in moments of sleeplessness?

Blank books also work well for capturing miscellaneous bits and pieces: story ideas, possible titles, interesting metaphors, character sketches, and the like. These are things that can easily get lost in the tidal wave of information on a hard drive. In addition, when looking for inspiration, it's sometimes helpful to have something you can hold in your hand and flip through. For many writers, just the feel of a book in their hands can be a source of inspiration, so flipping through a book of your own writing miscellany could be the perfect antidote to a dry stretch.

Research has also indicated that you access different areas of the brain when you write by hand and when you write by typing directly on your computer. That's not to say that one way is better than the other, but if you're looking for a change in your writing, a venture into a blank book may be just what you need to perk up your writing. You can take it to another room for a change of scenery, write in different color inks, all of which can spice up your writing.

With the variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, there's a blank book out there that will appeal to everyone. From wooden covers to silk, lined pages and unlined, locked and unlocked, you'll be sure to find one that's right for you. Even in this age of technology, a blank book can truly be a writer's best friend.
