Nightlife in Whitley Bay is Good by Douglas Scott

The town Whitley Bay is a busy town north of Newcastle. It has easy connections by road, rail and airport links available to the major towns which surround it. It has good beaches and promenades. It is probably known for Saint Marys lighthouse situated on Saint Marys Island.

The lighthouse is thirty eight meters high and was constructed in 1898. It was taken out of service in 1984 when it was no longer needed due to modern navigational techniques. The lighthouse now has a visitor centre which illustrates local wildlife and the islands history and visitors can climb its 147 steps.

The Spanish City and seafront area could be a cultural hub. An ambitious sixty million pound proposals for the regeneration of the Spanish City and seafront area of Whitley Bay were given full approval by councillors at the meeting. Demolition of remaining Spanish City buildings is ongoing and work has already started on road realignments and an events area at Whitley Park.

The scheme includes proposals to create a cultural quarter for visual and performing arts incorporating The Dome and Whitley Bay Playhouse. The council is contributing five million pound contribution towards the Playhouse Trusts eight million pound plans for the well loved theatre. These plans include new front of house facilities, new auditorium seating, and a new orchestra pit. A wide range of arts uses has been identified for the Dome and discussions with potential users also suggest the arts community are fully supportive of the project

Local/national tourist information, extensive information on local attractions and events, information on accommodation in the area, public transport information, a range of books and maps quality souvenirs. The team is also responsible for the promotion of events and activities that engage both residents and visitors.

A strong partnership exists between the local council, bar owners and Northumbria Police who urge visitors to have a good time but be on their best behaviour.
